Building Sites in a Growing Valley
Excavation contractors in Seymour work in one of the fastest-growing places in the region. The community grew 27.7 percent from 2000 to 2010 and another 34.7 percent to 14,705 people in 2020, with 6,085 housing units. Seymour straddles the corner of Sevier and Blount counties in a rolling valley where the Smokies foothills meet the Ridge-and-Valley, at about 1,211 feet.
Mountains on both sides
Bluff Mountain, the north end of the Chilhowee Mountain ridge, rises to the south, and Bays Mountain runs to the north. New homes are spreading onto the slopes of both. Steep lots need driveways with ditches and culverts and pads benched into the hill.
Unincorporated ground
Seymour residents have repeatedly voted to stay unincorporated, so county rules, not city rules, usually govern grading and building here, and which county depends on which side of the line a parcel sits. We confirm which applies before starting.
Old crossroads
Seymour began as Newell's Station in 1783, was known as Trundles Crossroads in the 1800s and took its current name when the Knoxville, Sevierville and Eastern Railway opened on December 18, 1909. Chapman Highway, US 411 and Boyds Creek Highway meet near the center.
Wet weather and steep drives
With the region averaging around 52 inches of rain a year, a steep gravel drive in Seymour has to shed water fast. We set water bars on the steep sections and line the ditch at the bottom where runoff collects.
Septic country
Many Seymour homes are on septic systems. Before we grade or set a driveway route, we locate the tank and field lines so heavy equipment stays off them.
