Excavation in the Secret City
Excavation contractors in Oak Ridge work in a city that was built almost overnight. It was established in 1942 as a planned community for the Manhattan Project, and most of its first homes went up in 1942 and 1943. The city now covers about 90 square miles in Anderson and Roane counties and had 31,402 residents in 2020. Most homes sit along the relatively steep northeastern slope of Blackoak Ridge.
Ridges and valleys
From west to east the city crosses Blackoak, East Fork, Pine, Chestnut and Haw ridges, with East Fork, Gamble, Bear Creek and Bethel valleys between them. Melton Hill reaches 1,356 feet. On a ridge-slope lot, the uphill neighbor's runoff is often the problem, and curtain drains, swales and buried downspouts are common fixes.
Cemesto houses
Many early homes were built of cemesto, a panel of bonded cement and asbestos. Demolition or digging next to one of those houses needs care, and any material suspected of containing asbestos must be handled by a qualified abatement contractor before we disturb it. We ask about the house's age and construction before quoting.
Water on three sides
The Clinch River bends around the city, forming Melton Hill Lake to the northeast and east and Watts Bar Lake to the south and southwest. Lots near the shoreline can have TVA and floodplain limits on grading and fill.
Federal land
The Oak Ridge Reservation, which includes Department of Energy sites, is on the EPA National Priorities List. Our work is on private residential and commercial property in town.
Wartime fill
Neighborhoods built in a rush in 1942 and 1943 were graded fast. Old fill, buried debris and stumps can show up when digging an addition footing or a new lateral. We probe and price the cleanout before any footing goes in.

Oak Ridge Questions
Can you demolish an old cemesto outbuilding?
Only after the asbestos-containing material is assessed and removed by a qualified abatement contractor. Then we can handle the demolition and hauling.
Water pours into my yard from the house above. What helps?
A curtain drain or swale along the uphill side usually intercepts it.
Do you work on lake lots?
Yes, after checking TVA and floodplain rules for the parcel.
Is rock common on Oak Ridge ridges?
It can be. We price rock separately in every estimate.
Could my yard have old fill from the 1940s?
Quite possibly. Rapid wartime construction left fill and debris in many yards. We check before building on it.
