Digging in a Planned Industrial Town

Excavation contractors in Alcoa work in a city founded around an aluminum plant. Around 1914 the company bought 700 acres of North Maryville and began building a smelting plant and 150 houses for employees. By 1920 about 3,358 people lived in 700 houses, and the city was incorporated as Alcoa in 1919. The 2020 census counted 10,978 residents.

Company-built neighborhoods

The company laid out Vose and Springbrook to the north and Bassel and Hall to the south, and began selling company houses to employees in the early 1950s. Many of those houses are now a century old. Their sewer laterals, water lines and footings were built to the standards of their day. Lateral replacements, new water services and drainage around old foundations are common work here.

Industrial history

Alcoa's West Plant rolling mill dates to 1919 and the North Plant to the early 1940s. Properties near former industrial ground can turn up old fill, slag or debris in a dig. If we find something unexpected, we stop and talk about it before continuing.

Little River and the greenway

The Little River flows through eastern Alcoa before reaching the Tennessee River near Louisville. The Maryville-Alcoa Greenway, with its 3-mile Alcoa section finished in 1998, runs from Springbrook Park toward Maryville. Lots near the river and greenway can have floodplain limits on grading and fill.

Airport and highways

McGhee Tyson Airport sits in Blount County, run by Knoxville, and Alcoa Highway and Pellissippi Parkway carry heavy traffic. We schedule hauling to avoid peak hours on those corridors.

Tight lots in old neighborhoods

Company-built neighborhoods have small lots and houses close together. We bring compact machines, protect neighbors' lawns and plan where a dump truck can park without blocking a narrow street.

Alcoa Questions

My Alcoa house is from the 1920s. Should I worry about the sewer line?

Lines that old are often clay or cast iron. A camera inspection by a plumber shows the condition; if it needs replacing, we dig the trench.

Can you work near the Little River?

Yes, after checking floodplain limits for the lot.

Do you haul away old concrete?

Yes, from patios, walks and old slabs.

What if you dig up old fill or debris?

We stop, show you and price the removal before going further.

Can you fit equipment between houses?

Usually, with a compact excavator or skid steer. We confirm widths on the site visit.
