Working in a Historic Greenbelt Town

Excavation contractors in Norris work in a historic town built by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933 for workers building Norris Dam on the Clinch River. The houses were built from local wood and stone in twelve basic designs, each with a porch and fireplace, and were among the first all-electric homes. The whole town became a National Register district in 1975. It had 1,599 residents in 2020.

A greenbelt town

Norris was the first self-contained U.S. town planned with greenbelt principles, with a central green and a belt of rural land reserved around it. The Norris Municipal Watershed covers more than 2,200 acres.

Hills above the river

The town sits on hills south of the Clinch at about 1,079 feet. Homes on slopes deal with runoff and settled grading, and 1930s foundations call for careful work.

Small equipment, light touch

Norris lots are wooded and the houses are close to the street. We use compact machines, protect trees, and restore lawns.

Rock in the hills

The hills south of the Clinch can have rock close to the surface, and chert is common in regional ridge soils. The USDA describes Fullerton soils with 10 to 45 percent chert gravel and cobbles in individual layers. Rock is priced separately.

Wet weather

The region sees around 52 inches of rain in a normal year. Sloped lots in Norris benefit from swales and downspout lines that move roof water off the hill gently.
